The US has not formally recognized Taiwan as an independent state. Since the 1979 U.S.-P.R.C. Joint Communique, Washington switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing and maintains only UNOFFICIAL relations with Taiwan via the American Institute in Taiwan; official US policy does not support de jure Taiwan independence ('strategic ambiguity'). This status was unchanged through mid-2024 and remains so.
Through 2024 there were only congressional resolutions and advocacy op-eds CALLING for US recognition of Taiwanese independence (e.g. Rep. Tiffany's resolution; FAPA op-ed) — none enacted; the State Department continued to list Taiwan under unofficial relations, confirming no formal recognition occurred by the deadline.
