Abrams, even if the training requirements were identical which they are not, you're talking a minimum of the year probably closer to three to build out the physical support infrastructure to get an appreciable number of Abrams in play.

Whether an appreciable number of M1 Abrams were NOT fielded in Ukraine until at least one year after Jan 2023 (i.e., not before Jan 2024)

Criterion met affirmatively: an appreciable number of M1 Abrams were NOT fielded in Ukraine before January 2024. Although delivery of the tanks themselves was accelerated (in-country by Oct 2023), they were withheld and not committed to front-line combat until late February 2024 (47th Brigade, Avdiivka). This is consistent with Zeihan's 'minimum one year' figure for building the support infrastructure to FIELD an appreciable number — first combat use came ~13 months after Jan 2023, just past the 1-year mark. (His 'probably closer to three years' upper estimate was not borne out — fielding happened nearer the one-year minimum than three years — a nuance for the later scoring stage on the prediction's central tendency.) Resolved_on set to 23 Feb 2024, the first documented Abrams front-line combat deployment, which confirms no appreciable fielding occurred before the 25 Jan 2024 deadline. Outcome value (o) and scoring not assigned (later stage).

Outcome evidence

  • Stars and Stripes / VOA (Sept-Oct 2023): The first tranche of US M1A1 Abrams arrived in Ukraine ~25 September 2023 (Pentagon confirmed by spokeswoman Sabrina Singh); all 31 promised Abrams had arrived by 16-17 October 2023. The Pentagon had originally said it would 'probably be 2024' before Ukraine saw tanks, but accelerated delivery by refurbishing older M1A1s instead of building new M1A2s. Arrival in-country did not equal front-line fielding.

    Evidence

  • Defense Express / Militarnyi (Feb 2024): Ukraine's 47th Mechanized Brigade published the first video of an M1A1 Abrams in combat operation on ~23 February 2024 — the first time Abrams faced the Russian army — on the Avdiivka operational axis. Two days later Russia published video of the first Abrams destroyed; by 20 April 2024 five of the 31 Abrams had been destroyed. Thus appreciable front-line fielding did not occur until ~13 months after the Jan 2023 statement (and ~1 month after the 25 Jan 2024 deadline).
